Back in the present after their adventures through time, Spirou and Fantasio try to pick up their life where they left it. But the magazine refuses to publish Fantasio’s account of their extraordinary journey, and he falls into depression. Until, that is, the bizarre and annoying Snuffeller reappears, bearing a call for help from Aurélien de Champignac, ‘their’ count’s descendant. A trip to the future appears in order – but what terrible discoveries await our intrepid reporters?

Another potential use of the zorglwave, and a sign that Zorglub’s remorse and his promise to free all of his men may not have been entirely sincere. Discovering the truth will take time, though, and send our friends on a trip far from home…

Spirou and Fantasio are spending a few days at Champignac Castle, keeping an eye on the estate while the Count is away visiting family. One night, as they are preparing to watch a comet pass in the sky, Fantasio’s clumsiness causes them to lose consciousness. They awaken to the very noisy arrival of de Champignac aboard one of his strange machines – except that the old man claims to be not the Count himself, but one of his descendants ... back from the future!

A hairdryer sent by an unknown party temporarily turns Fantasio into a docile automaton. Coming to in a car that appears to be driving itself, he hears the voice of his abductor, who introduces himself as Zorglub. When an accident allows Fantasio to escape, the mysterious kidnapper tries again with Spirou. In fact, the abductions’ only purpose is to send the Count of Champignac a message – he and Zorglub are old acquaintances. But what is the enigmatic genius planning?

An old seaplane skims the waves over the Pacific. Onboard are Vito Cortizone, former Don of the New York Mafia forced into early retirement by Spirou and Fantasio; Von Schnabbel, unscrupulous pilot; and a mysterious cargo supposed to turn Cortizone’s fortunes around. But the mafioso is cursed with terrible luck, and the plane ends up at the bottom of an isolated island’s lagoon. When two months later a sailing boat arrives, an unrecognisable Vito sees none other than our two adventurer-reporters come ashore!

He claims they bombed an automobile factory to steal the plans of a highly advanced prototype, and that he took half of the plans and ran. When they arrive, Champignac’s colleague Walker Donahue informs them that Champignac has been abducted by local gangster Sam. The monolith they’re after stands in the vicinity of an aboriginal mining village, which is constantly prey to white prospectors trying to steal indigenous resources. Spirou and Fantasio must save Champignac from Sam’s clutches and help him find the legendary monolith while standing by the aboriginal people.
